‘Uli’uli Workshop

Instructor – Kēhaulani Dinga
Skill Level:  Basic – intermediate
Early Bird Workshop Fee $130 ($155 after January 31st)

In this workshop, you will construct a single feather ‘uli’uli. You will also dance a hula with your new implement!

Class requirements:
All levels and abilities are welcome. Please wear comfortable clothes for the crafting phase of the workshop.  Bring pen, paper and needle nose pliers (only if you already own a pair). Wahine please bring pa’u.

Additional class materials:
The cost of crafting materials is an additional $40. Please pay instructor, directly, on the day of the workshop.

Kehaulani:
Alaka’i for Halau KaUaTuahine under the direction of Kumu Hula Mahealani Uchiyama, Kehaulani began implement crafting in 2003. She made her first ipu heke for the King Kamehameha hula competition from ‘Iolani Swan. She learned the art of puniu crafting from Kent Apo of Maui and lapa’iki making from Uncle Buddy Maka’iau. Most recently, Kehaulani attended Ka ‘Aha Hula O Halauaola 2018 where she learned the art of ‘uli’uli creation from Kumu Hula Kamuela Chun of Halau o Ke Kuhi.



Hawaiian Feather Art

Learn about the cultural aspects of Hawaiian Feather Art and create a contemporary Lei Hulu Lokelani — rosebud feather lei — using dyed goose feathers.

Herman Tachera is the kumu and founder of Hui Lei Hulu o Ho’omau located in the San Francisco Bay Area.  With over 20 years of experience in the Art of Hawaiian Feathers Herman has taught numerous workshops in Hawaii, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, Japan, Taipei, China and Korea.  He was taught by the foremost masters of Hawaiian Feather Art, Mary Louise Kekuewa and Paulette Kahalepuna.



Creating Your Solo Ori Tahiti Costume

We have the perfect workshop for you.

Turere Mataʻoa will offer a one-of-a-kind workshop in crafting your solo ori Tahiti costume! Bring your materials (there will also be wonderful accessories for sale at our craft fair) and Turere will help you create your own unique regalia.

This is a rare opportunity to have hands-on guidance with a master artist to create your costume, just in time for Fete season!

Additional class materials: There will be an additional fee of $35 for class materials, payable directly to the instructor.

Turere Mataʻoa was named top dancer of the Grand Heiva in Tahiti during the years 1987 – 1988. She is a professor of ori Tahiti and director of the Orihere Dance Company. Since 2007, she has been the Deputy Mayor of Arue, in support of Culture, Tourism and the Arts.
